·         Gain Business Knowledge and Move Up The Management Ladder: IT departments for the most part are considered a part of “back office” operations. What this means is that despite being a core part of the business, IT professionals do not often get enough say in revenue generating components of the business and as a result seldom have a chance to take up senior management roles.  So if you do not want to stay content with a project manager or senior project management salary, invest time and money in gaining business knowledge. It could be through a formal business degree, online training courses or just by keeping your eyes and ears open while in the organization. They could be very small projects tackling some problem that only you might have but there are multiple benefits of developing side projects. The short answer is, yes and no. It depends upon who you are. The purpose of this entry is to help you determine, yes or no.

Full disclosure. This entry is created on a Mac mini. And doing so on Windows 8 (Release Preview). If you are a developer, in my humble opinion you need to test on all platforms you expect your app to run or you are not much of a developer.

To be successful you need to leave politics in geographical territory known as Washington DC. My definition of that is: 14 mi.² of real estate surrounded by reality.

Only in politics can we afford to take sides. Those of us in IT, especially developers need to do our best to be all things to all people. Certainly this is a technical impossibility. However in our game we can get some points for at least being serviceable if not outstanding.

Evolving technologies become fun due to the immense advantages and features they bring with them. Fighting change though is human and while we may initially resist such changes, it is always better to accept them to our advantage.

Switching to HTML 5 is one such change we need to be ready for and there are at least 8 reasons why we should be doing so which are explained later in the article.

Earlier HTML was mainly used only for Web content development. But with the arrival of HTML 5, there would be a radical shift in that it would be used more and more for the development of many of the client side applications as well. The advantages straight away are that CSS as well as JavaScript become free due to the open architecture environment. HTML 5 is also pretty light and has a much easier code to read, making it convenient for devices like smart phones and tablets running on batteries to use the applications.
