We’re often asked by companies about how they can get the most value from Agile/Scrum practices. More specifically, they want to know if they are being as effective as best they possibly can be by using the Scrum framework for their explicit needs.

The other objective for individuals is determining if it necessary to be certified in order to be effective in the Agile Scrum world?   In short, a good Scrum Master must understand four things: the business they work in, the technology they work with, the Agile and Scrum principles, and, most importantly, people!  Based on these facts, Scrum Master Certification is not enough – real life experience and a bit of soft skills should be part and parcel of their training. For organizations, the main goal is to understand industry best practices when adopting and applying agile principles, to build strong teams, understand and distill business needs into software requirements.

In terms of getting a good grip on training for Agile/Scrum, one can opt to pursue a certification in Scrum (CSM) Certified Scrum Master for personal reasons or for a job requirement. Or, one can simply opt to learn the benefits and pitfalls of the methodology and decide the best approach for them.

There are different ways to get started with Agile training. Below are two of the most common paths to Agile our students take.

The Certified Master Training (CSM) is a mandatory two day class that has to be conducted onsite and in person. The course is taught by an authorized Certified Scrum Trainer (CST.)  Typically after the class, the instructor will administer the exam or set up a link with all the credentials in order for you to take it online. There is no additional fee for the exam. To pass the exam you need to answer 37 out of the 50 questions correctly within the on hour.

After the exam:
- You will be asked to accept the CSM License Agreement and complete your Scrum Alliance membership profile.
- In order to maintain your CSM certification, the Scrum Alliance requires that you earn Scrum Education Units (SEUs) and renew your certification every two years.
- The instructor will cover your membership cost for the first two years, thereafter it is your responsibility to do so.

Agile Development with Scrum Training is also a two-day training and covers the same topics as the CSM course, but does not focus on the certification, maintaining membership to the Alliance or earning SEUs. Rather, the training assures that participants walk away with an understating of what adopting Scrum will mean for their organization and themselves.
There are many misunderstandings about Agile/Scum implementation, training can help expose the underlying Agile concepts and clarify the message, concepts, and implementation tactics to gain a common language and perspectives for teams. This shared understanding strongly increases the probability of the team inspecting and adapting together and reducing future conflicts.
