What are some advantages of html5 that were not in html4
When asked for my pearls of wisdom on this topic, I was tempted to respond with the excuse: "Sorry, can't comment. My asbestos underwear is out for dry-cleaning."
It seems both the emotions and mis-information surrounding HTML 5 run high.
And some information is just plain scary. Consider this direct quote from the W3C.
"The following elements are not in HTML5 because using them damages usability and accessibility:
frame
frameset
noframes"
http://www.w3.org/TR/2012/WD-html5-diff-20120329/
And other attributes are now considered obsolete.
Some layout calls are now gone and moved over to CSS.
Then there is the can of worms regarding APIs. Some have been depreciated, others changed or extended. As well there is a boatload of new APIs.
In short, if you are not embracing lifelong learning the best suggestion I have is exit the business and open a taco stand somewhere.
Some may argue that HTML 5 is still a work in progress and can be ignored until then. That would be a fatal mistake. As Bob Dylan sang: "The Times They Are a Changing".
Even Microsoft is changing its tune. It's old mantra about standards went: "Embrace, Extend, Control." The old Microsoft appears to be quite dead.
The new Microsoft appears to be saying goodbye to its Adobe Flash competitor, Silverlight, in favor of HTML 5.
Have you looked at how compatible Internet Explorer V10 is for HTML 5?
For me, the toughest thing I am having to relearn is no longer calling it Internet Exploder.
The ability to handle documents in HTML 5 is exceeded only by my delight to be able to embed video without a player. I'm experimenting now with having embedded video resize auto magically for mobile device viewing.
Even Adobe appears to be getting the clue that it's battery eating, crash prone Flash offering is going to start looking like a Windows operating system based on DOS.
My advice to you is either embrace the changes or open a taco stand somewhere.
